Step 1: Write good plot lines with really well developed characters that people are emotionally attached to.
Step 2: KILL EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING
Step 3: If your show survives your homicidal rampage, replace old characters with new ones. Or, if your show is Sci-Fi, keep bringing them back to die again.
