Let’s talk about the Black Widow character in The Avengers. Some things have come to my attention recently.

Look, I don’t care if you like her or not; I’m not in no position to tell you who to like or dislike. But if you dislike her just because she’s a woman, or “useless” as so many people have spoken in regards to her, or slut-shame her, I’m gonna have a problem with that.

I realize she’s the only female Avenger on the team and that automatically puts a lot of pressure on her - people immediately have opinions on what she should be or what she should do. It’s already hard for female characters in this industry but you’re already complaining about her involvement?

First of all, she is not useless. Far from it. She’s on a team with a lot of super-powered dudes andholds her ground.She stands there and fights. And she’s pretty good at it; she’s the best spy in the Marvel universe and you bet she knows what she’s doing.

She isn’t emotionless. She’s got plenty of them. I’m sorry she isn’t a fucking ray of sunshine 24/7 but she does, in fact, feel things and it isn’t a robot. Plus, in this line of work, you’d have to be damn good at controlling your emotions and not showing how scared you really are.

And the slut-shaming is ridiculous because it’s completely unwarranted. You’re basically calling her a slut because that’s one of the most widely used insults you can call a woman. I hate that word because why the fuck do you care who a woman sleeps with? It’s entirely her own business.

Her being “just” eye-candy is also not true; while I agree that she’s attractive, it’s not her main job. From what we’ve seen from the trailers, she DOES PLENTY. She kicks ass and helps her team. She doesn’t just stand there looking pretty.

And lastly, there are people who insult her for getting in their OTP’s way….which is ridiculous. It has nothing to do with her worth as a person, so stop it.

tl;dr: I don’t care if you hate Natasha. But if you have a ridiculous reason for it, I will call you out on it. No one judges the main guys for being just eye-candy or incompetent at their job; everyone always focuses on the women. Think about that.

My only problem with Natasha is a concern with the way she is sometimes marketed, like the ASS SHOT in the first banner that they released (which has been fixed, thank god). I haven’t seen much of her in the comics, but I do know that she is capable as fuck, and the fact that she gets to be on a team of dudes, most of whom have superpowers, and she can only use guns? How is that not insanely badass? I admit, I tend to choose to read about/watch more of the COOL SUPA-POWERS style of hero, but come on. Black Widow is great, and she’s a lady in a boys’ club. For that reason alone, we need to support her.

ALSO: how the fuck is she a slut? Who has she even slept with in the movieverse? I mean, regardless of the answer, that’s a hurtful and unfair term, but people make it so obvious how the term has just become a general female insult, and shows how ingrained the Puritan emphasis on female virginity is in our culture.

I barely know anything about this character, but I’m standing up for her as a lady, if nothing else. I like to think that Joss will avoid showing us just her boobs and butt for the whole movie, and he’ll give her action to match the big guns.
